Frequently Asked Questions

What is the advantage of a 48V track system compared to 230V?

48V systems use low-voltage technology. This makes the busbars significantly more delicate, flatter, and more minimalist in design compared to classic 3-phase 230V tracks. Additionally, the system is completely touch-safe, allowing luminaires and LED spotlights to be moved or replaced safely even while in operation.

Do I need a transformer for a 48V low-voltage track system?

Yes. As the system runs on 48V direct current (DC) but the house's power grid supplies 230V alternating current, a suitable 48V power supply (transformer) is required. This is either placed externally in the ceiling/wall or directly as a feeder at the beginning of the track. When selecting the power supply, ensure that the total wattage of all connected LED luminaires does not exceed the transformer's output.

Can 48V busbars be cut to size yourself?

Yes, our 48V tracks can be easily cut to the desired length with a standard hacksaw. Since this is low-voltage technology, no elaborate insulation work on the copper conductors is necessary after a clean cut.

What is the maximum length for a 48V track system?

Thanks to modern 48V technology, voltage drop over long distances is significantly lower than with old 12V or 24V systems. You can easily realize track lengths of up to 20 to 30 meters with just a single power supply, as long as the selected power supply unit is adequately sized.

Can 48V low-voltage track systems be dimmed?

Yes, 48V track systems are excellently suited for modern and smart lighting controls. As the system operates with direct current, there are flexible options: For professional installations in commercial settings or new constructions, control via DALI or 0-10V is often used. In private areas or for retrofitting, smart wireless solutions (such as Casambi, Zigbee, or Tuya) are usually employed, where the LED spotlights can be dimmed directly via an app or remote control. When purchasing, make sure that both the 48V power supply and the LED luminaires are declared "dimmable" and are compatible with your desired control system.

48V Track System - Low Voltage Lighting Installation Guide

⚠️ Safety Instructions

Please read carefully before starting the installation:

  • Qualified Personnel: The 48V DC voltage in the track is absolutely safe to touch for humans. But beware: The connection of the 48V power supply (transformer) to the normal 230V household power grid must only be carried out by a qualified electrician (according to VDE 0100).
  • Switch off power: Before installing the power supply unit, switch off the corresponding fuse in the fuse box and secure it against being switched on again.
  • Verify de-energization: Always check that the 230V supply line is de-energized with a suitable measuring device (e.g., multimeter or two-pole voltage tester) before connecting the transformer.
  • Area of application: The system is exclusively suitable for dry indoor areas, unless the components are expressly marked as IP65+ (damp room/outdoor area).
  • Workplace safety: Keep children and unauthorized persons away from the work area during assembly and drilling.

🔧 Required Components

System Components:

All suitable components can be found in our shop.

Tools & Aids:

  • Voltage tester / multimeter (for the 230V supply line)
  • Drill with suitable drill bit (depending on ceiling material: concrete, wood or plasterboard)
  • Load-appropriate anchors and screws
  • Screwdriver, possibly wire strippers
  • Fine metal saw (if tracks need to be shortened)
  • Spirit level, pencil, tape measure

📋 Installation Steps

1. Planning & Preparation

  • Mark the track path precisely on the ceiling or wall with a pencil.
  • Determine the position of the 48V power supply and the feeder.
  • Power calculation: Add up the wattages of all planned LED spotlights. The total power should not exceed the maximum power of the 48V transformer (plan a safety reserve of approx. 15–20%).

2. Track Mounting

  • Shorten Tracks (optional): If necessary, cut the 48V track to the desired length with a fine metal saw. Thoroughly remove burrs and metal shavings from the inside.
  • Mark and drill holes.
  • Insert anchors and rigidly screw the track profiles (or the corresponding mounting brackets) to the ceiling.
  • Use a spirit level to check that the system is perfectly aligned.

3. Connecting the Power Supply & Feeder

  • Connect the input side of the 48V power supply to the 230V supply line (Only by a qualified electrician!).
  • Wire the 48V output (DC) of the power supply to the track feeder.
  • Important: Pay close attention to correct polarity (+ / -) according to the marking on the feeder to avoid malfunction of the LED electronics.

4. Mounting End Caps & Connectors

  • Slide the track connectors into the track ends to establish mechanical stability and electrical contact (48V forwarding) between the profiles.
  • Securely close all open track ends with the appropriate end caps.

5. Function Test

  • Switch the fuse in the fuse box back on.
  • Check the green LED on the power supply (if present) or measure the 48V output voltage.
  • Insert the first 48V LED spotlight into the track to successfully test the system.

💡 Inserting Spotlights & Adapters

  • The 48V LED lights can be inserted at any point in the track.
  • Depending on the model, the spotlights noticeably click into place via a simple click mechanism or a mechanical locking slider.
  • Big advantage of 48V technology: Since it is absolutely safe low-voltage current, you can safely move, remove and reposition the spotlights even when the light is switched on (Hot-Plugging).
  • Rotate and align the spotlights in the desired direction.

🔄 Phase Assignment & Light Control

In contrast to classic 230V systems, separate control in 48V low-voltage systems is not achieved via mechanical phase rotary switches, but via smart radio protocols or digital control signals:

Control Options

  • Smart Home (Zigbee / Casambi / Tuya): The spotlights receive their signals wirelessly. They can be digitally assigned to different light groups via an app, a radio remote control, or a smart wall switch.
  • DALI / 0-10V: For professional installations, control signals are transmitted directly via additional wires in the track to the dimmable spotlights.

This allows countless light groups and light scenes (e.g., "Cozy" scene, "Working" scene) to be programmed completely flexibly and changed at any time at the push of a button.

🛠️ Maintenance & Care

  • Although moving the spotlights during operation is safe at 48V, it is recommended to carry out larger modifications or the insertion of new components when the power is switched off.
  • Regularly check the power rails for dust. Clean only with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Never wipe with a damp cloth and absolutely prevent liquids from entering the interior of the track.
  • For extensions or defects, use only original spare parts and compatible 48V components from RIMCLED.

📞 Support & Warranty

Our team is always happy to advise you on questions regarding planning, suitable transformer calculation, or smart lighting control.

⚠️ Disclaimer: The warranty for system components expires in case of improper installation, incorrect polarity of the power supply, or the use of third-party components not approved for the system.
